"The best way to predict the future is to create it." -Abraham LincolnOver the weekend, I joined a gym for the first time! I'm super excited and, even though I've already highlighted every class I want to take, I can't stop looking at this month's schedule! Who knew there were so many kinds of Zumba? One class that I can barely wait for is my first yoga class. It's called Hatha Yoga. I knew already that there were many types of yoga, but I had no idea what this was, so I looked it up. According to this article by Ann Pizer on About.com, "These days, hatha is most often used to describe gentle, basic classes with no flow between poses. A hatha class will likely be a slow-paced stretching class with some simple breathing exercises and perhaps seated meditation." I will admit, I'm a little turned off by how slow I'm expecting it to be, but I am highly highly inflexible (I can't even touch my toes! How sad is that?) and I want to get comfortable with yoga before stepping up to Vinyasa.
So since we are on the topic of yoga, someone who has given me such a big interest in yoga is Rachel Brathen. I first found Rachel on the popular page of Instragram about one year or so ago. I was amazed by her flexibility and movement. I checked out her website and read her story. Here's a small snippet of what she has:
"Swedish native Rachel Brathen has been practicing yoga since she was a young teen. After graduating school she traveled to Costa Rica and it was here that she found the joy of incorporating yoga into her everyday life. Deepening her yoga practice and also taking her first steps towards teaching, she ended up moving to Central America where she spent years exploring the intricate studies of yoga and spirituality."How amazing is this?! Rachel does retreats and workshops all over the world teaching people her practice. Fun fact: I've always wanted to be a yoga instructor, which is funny considering I've never done yoga, but it seems so fun. But anyway, Rachel inspires me to step outside of my box and welcome peacefulness, which is why I am dedicating my first blog post to her.
As I was making a visit to the Free People Blog, I went to "Movement" and guess who was the newest post? Rachel Brathen! You can visit that post here. I decided to search through to see if they had any older posts featuring Rachel and I found this interview done earlier this year. If you have time, it's a beautiful read and if you want to know more about Rachel, I have her links listed at the end of this post.
Thanks for reading!
